Singapore, July 18, 2024: The generosity and vision of philanthropist and sports enthusiast Peter Lim is reaping rich rewards for the Singapore National Olympic Council.
Of the 23 athletes in 11 sports representing Singapore in the Paris Olympic Games, no fewer than eight of them have come through the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship programme.
They are: Quah Jing Wen (swimming), Gan Ching Hwee (swimming), Amita Berthier (fencing), Shanti Pereira (athletics), Saiyidah Aisyah (rowing), Izaac Quek (table tennis), Terry Hee (badminton) and Jessica Tan Weihan (badminton).
In June 2010, the Singapore Olympic Foundation set up the SOF-Peter Lim Scholarship with a S$10-million donation from Peter Lim. The gift remains the single largest donation in Singapore from an individual towards sports development.
In 2019, Mr. Lim renewed his commitment, pledging an additional $10 million to continue the scholarship from 2021 to 2030.
The driving force behind the scholarship is the desire to ensure that no promising young athlete who is committed to chasing his or her sporting dreams should be hampered by financial restraints.
“Congratulations to the eight Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship recipients who will be heading to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” posted the Singapore NOC.
“Since 2011, Team Singapore has produced 23 Olympians who were beneficiaries of the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship.”
Sailor Ryan Lo and Asian Games champion sprinter Shanti Pereira will lead the Team Singapore contingent as flag bearers at the opening ceremony on Friday, July 26. Both flag bearers will be heading into their second Olympic Games.
