Kampar, Malaysia, July 15, 2024: The Olympic Council of Asia’s unceasing campaign to ensure fair play and integrity in sports was a key feature at the World Triathlon/Asian Triathlon Youth Development Camp in Kampar on Monday, July 15.
Jamyang Namgyal, Manager, Athletes Department, OCA conducted a presentation on the Prevention of Manipulation of Competition for the 73 triathletes and coaches from 25 Asian National Olympic Committees at the residential camp.
“It is important to be free of manipulation of competition in sports. There are four key messages, which are ‘don’t fix, don’t bet, don’t share inside information and always report’,” Namgyal told the young athletes, aged between 14 and 17 years.
These scourges of sports – match-fixing, betting and insider information – were touched on. The OCA official also warned about the dangers of social media, where unknowingly, one might share information of an injured teammate, which is valuable knowledge to match-fixers.
The session ended with a video made by Danish ice hockey forward Kirill Starkov who was banned from the sport after making a bet on his own team. It was a stark lesson on how a sports career can be ruined.
The OCA has been regularly holding webinars on PMC in the strong push to upkeep the integrity of sports in Asia. Last month, the OCA in conjunction with the IOC held an online meeting attended by 60 participants from Asian NOCs.
On Monday, the focus was on the young triathletes, the future of the sport in Asia.
