Olympic champion still ‘in vogue’ in Philippines

Olympic champion still ‘in vogue’ in Philippines

Manila, Philippines, July 2, 2024: Although the Philippines’ only Olympic champion, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, will not be competing in Paris this summer, there is no keeping her out of the news back home.

Diaz, who won the women’s -55kg title at Tokyo 2020 to become a national hero, features on the cover of Vogue Philippines for July 2024.

“Weightlifting has been part of my life for 22 years,” Hidilyn Diaz (@HidilynDiaz) shares.

“Knowing your ‘why’ is important in being an athlete. It’s what makes you stay and keeps you going when the road gets tough.”

In the Vogue article, Hidilyn talks about what she wants out of the next chapter of her life, from the Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Academy to thinking of starting a family to, unsurprisingly, working hard to earn the privilege of representing the country again.

Vogue describes her as “Olympic gold medalist and trailblazer” on the cover with the headline of “Champions – Olympians, sportsmen and women”.
