Royal send-off for Paris-bound Malaysian athletes

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 2, 2024: The Malaysian contingent for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was given a royal send-off by the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, during the flag handover ceremony at the Istana Negara on Tuesday, July 2.

 

On the auspicious occasion, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong handed over the Jalur Gemilang to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, who in turn passed it over to the President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

 

In a symbolic gesture signifying the contingent’s readiness to take on the rest of the world, Tan Sri Dr. Norza handed over the Jalur Gemilang to the Chef de Mission of the Malaysian contingent, Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.

 

Also present at the ceremony were the Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ts. Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu; the Director General of the National Sports Council, Abdul Rashid Yaakub; OCM Vice President Dato' Paduka Mumtaz Jaffar; OCM Secretary General Dato' Mohd Nazifuddin, and OCM Assistant Treasurer Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali.

 

*The Athlete’s Pledge was read out by Olympian Johnathan Wong Guanjie (shooting).

*Malaysia will be represented by 25 athletes in nine of the 32 sports in Paris. The final number of athletes will be 26, depending on the sole universality slot to be determined by the Malaysian Athletics Federation. 

*The flagbearers at the opening ceremony on Friday, July 26 will be Bertrand Rhodict Lises (diving) and Olympian Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif (sailing).
