Kandy, Sri Lanka, June 23, 2024: The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka held its Olympic Day 2024 celebrations with a series of events attended by schoolchildren, parents and teachers on Wednesday, June 19.

The celebrations unfolded at the Digana Sports Complex Indoor Stadium, a few miles from Kandy, the hill capital of the island, and featured a number of events including a parents and sports teachers forum, an art and craft competition, a tree planting programme and a fitness challenge and obstacle race.

Later in the day, an Olympic Day Parade was held, commencing with a ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Torch by NOC officials including Secretary General Maxwell de Silva. The parade started at the Pallekelle Cricket Ground, a venue for international Test cricket, and ended at the Digana Sports Complex a few miles away.

The Sri Lanka NOC also held a horse riding workshop for young children at Victoria Golf Club as part of the day-long celebrations.

The NOC congratulated the winner of the island-wide Olympic Day TikTok competition, Nipun Diwanka, whose short video of an elderly man reminiscing of the friendship during his youth was adjudged the top entry.
