First leg of OS/OCA regional forum wraps up in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 2, 2024: The first leg of the Olympic Solidarity/OCA Regional Forum came to an end at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, June 2.

 

The President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Dr. Norza Zakaria, thanked the OCA Deputy Director General, Mr. Vinod Kumar Tiwari, and the OCA team for their input and assistance in organising the two-day forum. 

 

The OCM President also thanked the four-strong team from IOC Olympic Solidarity in Lausanne, Switzerland, the delegates from National Olympic Committees in East Asia and South East Asia and the OCM staff for their work behind the scenes. Around 100 delegates took part.

 

The Regional Forum now moves to Bahrain for the second leg from June 5-6 with NOCs from West Asia, Central Asia and South Asia.

 

The first day of the two-day forum in Kuala Lumpur focused on preparations for two upcoming OCA games: the 6thAsian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Bangkok and Chonburi, Thailand, from November 21-30 and the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China from February 7-14, 2025.

 

The second day was dedicated to the Paris 2024 Olympics and the subsidies available from Olympic Solidarity for NOCs before, during and after the Games.

 

The final session on Sunday morning presented Olympic Scholarship figures, with 34 NOCs securing training scholarships for 314 athletes in 24 sports for Paris 2024. The figure comprised 132 female athletes and 182 male athletes. Furthermore, there were five tailor-made grants.

 

Looking ahead to the next Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina, Italy in 2026, 43 Asian athletes (17 women and 26 men) from 13 NOCs in five sports are benefiting from OS scholarships, plus one tailor-made grant.

 

The Team Support Grant has been awarded to 40 teams (21 women’s teams and 19 men’s teams) in 25 Asian NOCs for Paris 2024.

 

The Olympic Solidarity report also covered entourage, including technical courses for coaches, scholarships for coaches, sports development and the national sports system, youth athlete identification, Olympic values programmes and financial guidelines.

 

The new Olympic Solidarity funding programme for 2025-2028 will be detailed at next year’s OS/OCA Regional Forum.
