QOC President Sheikh Joaan hosts 36th meeting of GCC NOC presidents

Doha, Qatar, May 30, 2024: HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, chaired the 36th meeting of the Council of the Presidents of the National Olympic Committees of the Gulf Cooperation Council at the Doha Sheraton on Wednesday, May 29.

 

Sheikh Joaan opened the meeting by welcoming the distinguished gathering of GCC NOC Presidents and conveyed to them the greetings of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar.

 

The QOC President then expressed his thanks and appreciation to Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair, President of the Oman Olympic Committee, for the sincere efforts made under his chairmanship in strengthening cooperation in sports in the GCC.

 

Sheikh Joaan also congratulated the United Arab Emirates on the successful hosting of the first edition of the Gulf Youth Games, saying it was an important step in preparing the younger generation of athletes from the region.

 

During the meeting, it was recommended to implement executive steps to strengthen the NOCs and empower them to ensure the continued development of sports to achieve the aspirations of athletes in the GCC. 

 

The Presidents of the GCC NOCs were briefed on the recommendations on joint Gulf work, where the Secretariat received 13 requests to host Gulf sports championships in 2024.

 

The Presidents were also briefed that a GCC multi-sports competition, either the Youth Games, Beach Games, Indoor and Martial Arts Games or a general sports Games, be held every year.

 

The meeting closed with the decision to hold the 37th meeting of the heads of the GCC NOCs in Kuwait on May 6, 2025.
