Bangkok, Thailand, May 11, 2024: The Olympic Council of Asia Vice President for East Asia, Timothy Fok, spoke of the “extraordinary accomplishments” of the region in hosting three major multi-sport games in recent months.
In his report to the 43rd OCA General Assembly on Saturday, Mr. Fok drew the attention of the house to the success of the 2023 East Asian Youth Games in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China and the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, Korea.
“This report aims to highlight and celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of the recent three significant games across East Asia that have captivated the sporting world,” he said.
“These games have not only showcased exceptional athletic prowess but also embodied the spirit of competition, unity and athletic excellence.”
He said the 2023 East Asian Youth Games provided a platform for emerging athletes to showcase their skills and passion.
“The athletes demonstrated exceptional determination and sportsmanship, inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams in the Olympic Games in 2028 and 2032. These young athletes have paved the way for a brighter future in the world of sports,” he added.
Mr. Fok said the 19th Asian Games “captivated the world with its grandeur and magnificence. Hangzhou, known for its rich cultural heritage and technological innovation, proved to be an ideal host for this prestigious event.
“The Asian Games fostered a spirit of camaraderie and cultural exchange, showcasing the diverse traditions and talents of our continent.”
Regarding the fourth Winter YOG in Korea – and the first to be staged in Asia – Mr. Fok described them as “exhilarating”.
“This event celebrated the prowess of our young winter athletes, who braved the icy conditions and pushed their limits to achieve greatness…captivating audiences worldwide with their grace and skill.
“These games not only showcased the sporting achievements of our youth but also emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.”
He concluded: “These three big games have left an indelible mark on the landscape of East Asian sports development. They have inspired countless young athletes to dream big, to strive for excellence and to embrace the values of fair play and friendship.”
