Amman, Jordan, March 2, 2020: The Asia and Oceania boxing qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Amman, Jordan, has generated huge corporate interest with organisers revealing considerable sponsorship response.
The March 3-11 qualifiers, which will involve boxers from 40 countries, has attracted some big brands like Worldwide Olympic partner Coca-Cola, banking group Societe Generale De Banque Jordan, mobile network Zain Jordan, sports restaurant chain Buffalo Wings and Rings, Taishan and courier Aramex.
The event - originally scheduled for February 3-14 in Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the deadly coronavirus - was moved to Amman and will be held at the Prince Hamzah Hall Al Hussein Youth City.
Nasser Majali, Secretary General of the Jordan Olympic Committee and CEO of the local organising committee, said: “We have been short on time but huge on effort to ensure this event meets the extremely high standards of the Olympic family.
“The support we have received from the business community has been particularly heartening and provides us with the helping hand required to host a world-class event,” Majali added.
A total of 41 men’s Olympic slots across eight weight divisions and 22 women’s slots in five divisions will be up for grabs when the action commences on Tuesday, March 3.
Apart from the Olympic boxing qualifiers, Jordan also hosted the West Asia Olympic Table Tennis qualifiers last month and will next month host the Asian Taekwondo Olympic qualifiers. All three events will see nearly 500 athletes from 45 countries and regions travel to Amman.
The Jordan Olympic Committee claimed that the events have highlighted its “sporting ambition and event-hosting capability”.
Majali said: “We are honoured to welcome hundreds of the world’s best athletes to Jordan. Hosting a series of Tokyo 2020 qualifying events not only underlines Jordan’s sporting ambitions, it also demonstrates that the Kingdom has the experience to host world-class international sports events.”
