Tehran, Iran, May 1, 2024: Mehdi Olfati will become the first Iranian gymnast to compete at the Olympics after he finished second in the Men’s Vault Olympic qualification rankings according to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
Olfati did not compete at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Doha, Qatar, last month. But when the latest Olympic qualification rankings were released by FIG, he had done enough at the first three World Cups to remain in second place on the Olympic leaderboard and earn a quota for Paris.
Olfati’s Olympic qualification was hailed by the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran who posted on social media “this happens for the first time in Iranian gymnastics history.”
Last September, Olfati went down in the record books by winning a historic silver medal in the men's vault at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
