New Delhi, India, April 30, 2024: The Indian Olympic Association has congratulated two female athletes, shooter Maheshwari Chauhan and sailing’s Nethra Kumanan, for securing Paris 2024 Olympics quotas.
Tokyo 2020 Olympian Kumanan earned India’s second Paris 2024 quota in sailing during the Last Chance Regatta, an Olympic qualifying event, in Hyeres, France last week.
Kumanan, competing in the women’s dinghy (ILCA 6), finished fifth. However, due to being the top performer among all sailors from the Emerging Nations Programme (ENP), she managed to earn India a ticket to the Olympics.
World Sailing uses the ENP to help sailors from countries that are not known to have a huge sailing culture.
Meanwhile, Maheshwari Chauhan earned a Paris ticket by winning the silver medal in women’s skeet in the Shotgun Olympic qualification championship in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, April 28.
It was the 21st quota for India in the Olympics shooting competition, and the fifth in shotgun. In the process of qualifying, the 27-year-old Chauhan set a national record with a score of 121 out of 125.
“It was amazing, it was better than what I hoped for,” Chauhan was quoted in the Indian media. “It has taken me a long time and a lot of hard work to get here.”
The IOA posted messages congratulating both athletes on its website.
