Asian Games champions Haughey, Cheung win top awards in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China, April 25, 2024: The Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) announced the winners of the Cathay 2023 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, April 24.

 

Tokyo Olympic champion Edgar Cheung Ka Long (fencing) was named Male Athlete of the Year for winning the men’s individual foil gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games and at the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, and Siobhan Haughey (swimming) was named Female Athlete of the Year for her two gold medals in the 100m and 200m freestyle at Hangzhou and silver in the 100m free at the World Aquatics Championships 2023 in Fukuoka.

 

Both Cheung and Haughey were winning the top individual awards for the third time.

 

SF&OC received 118 nominations from 54 National Sports Associations in this year's awards. Following voting by judging panels, the media and the public, all 16 winners across four award categories were determined. 

 

At the awards presentation ceremony, the list of officiating and award presentation guests included Mr. John Lee, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, SF&OC President Timothy Fok, and Ms. Lavinia Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer of Cathay.

 

In other awards, the history-making men's football team, who reached the semi-finals at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, won the Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport

 

SF&OC President Timothy Fok said: "Whether they win or not, the efforts and performance of our athletes make us proud. They have put in countless sweat and toil, and surpass their own limits with persistence and perseverance. 

 

“The achievements of our athletes are not only personal glories but also the pride of Hong Kong. We look forward to seeing more Hong Kong athletes compete with the world's top athletes on the big stage of the Paris Olympics."
