Dubai, United Arab Emirates, April 16, 2024: HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and President of the UAE NOC, believes the inaugural Gulf Youth Games reflects the commitment of the GCC countries in strengthening bonds among youth and promoting their sports career.
The 1st Gulf Youth Games gets underway on Tuesday, April 16 in the UAE with the participation of around 3,500 male and female athletes.
“The inaugural edition of this event aims to empower the new generation of athletes in the GCC and inspire future generations to excel, as reflected in the event’s theme ‘Our Gulf is One…. Our Youth is Promising’,” Sheikh Ahmed noted.
Sheikh Ahmed, who is also President of the Gulf Youth Games, emphasised the impact of sports events hosted in the GCC, stating their ability to leave a significant legacy, ultimately enhancing the GCC’s reputation and influence within the global Olympic sports arena.
“Young athletes in the GCC have earned admirable achievements in major sporting events, which reflects the progress and expansion of the Olympic movement,” Sheikh Ahmed said.
The 1st Gulf Youth Games features 24 sports and disciplines and will take place across the Emirates, in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah.
Host nation UAE will be represented by 520 male and female athletes.
Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Vice President of the UAE NOC, extended a warm welcome to all participants and said the event serves as a platform to celebrate the youth in the Gulf and their contributions.
Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Vice President of the UAE NOC, praised the event as a milestone in empowering young athletes in the Gulf and highlighted the UAE’s commitment to nurturing youth talent across all fields, in particular sports, pointing to the National Youth Agenda launched in 2016.
Faris Al Mutawa, Secretary General of the UAE NOC, said: “The Gulf Youth Games represent a convergence of hope, ambition and passion for excellence within an exemplary atmosphere that fosters creativity.”
The Opening Ceremony of the Games will be held at the Dubai Opera on April 23.
The Games will close on May 2.
