Singapore, April 2, 2024: Singapore’s Olympic champion Joseph Schooling announced his retirement from swimming on Tuesday, April 2.

Schooling, 28, won Singapore’s first and only Olympic Games gold medal in the 100 metres butterfly at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

He also won three gold medals in the Asian Games and 29 in the Southeast Asian Games during a stellar career that will always be remembered for his historic gold in Rio as he beat his idol, Michael Phelps.

“It’s been an unforgettable journey with you, Joseph. May your next chapters be as awe-inspiring and meaningful as the ones you gave us. Thank you,” the Singapore National Olympic Council posted.

Looking ahead, Schooling plans to explore the areas of finance and sports, and grow his swim school.

Another area of interest for him is growing the pipeline of local talent.
