Iraq NOC President offers full support to football federation in Olympic qualifying bid

Baghdad, Iraq, April 1, 2024: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq Dr. Aqeel Muftin welcomed the President of the Iraq Football Federation Adnan Darjal at the NOC headquarters on Sunday, March 31.

The Iraqi NOC President praised the work of the Football Federation and the achievements of national teams across all age groups, the latest being the qualification of the senior national team for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Muftin emphasised the NOC is highly supportive of the Iraq Football Federation and was hopeful the Under-23 national team would qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The top three teams in the 16-team AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Qatar from April 15-May 3 will book an Olympic berth in Paris, while the fourth-placed team enters a play-off against a team from Africa. Iraq is grouped with Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Tajikistan in the preliminary round.

On his part, the President of the Iraq Football Federation appreciated the work of the NOC and said he prized the support given to the U-23 team in its bid to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

Also present at the meeting was NOC Secretary General Haitham Abdul Hamid and officials from the Football Federation.
