Manila, Philippines, March 19, 2024: The Philippines’ first Olympic champion, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, has received another prestigious honour from the government.
In a letter dated March 12, 2024, Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richard Bachmann informs Diaz that she has been named “Flame awardee” at the upcoming Women in Sports Awards set to take place at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila on March 20.
“The event – the first of its kind in our nation – aims to recognize exemplary women who have demonstrated outstanding prowess or made significant contributions to their respective fields in sports,” Bachmann wrote.
“As a Flame awardee, you will be honoured for your strong dedication, igniting the fire that led to the popularity of your sport in the Philippines.”
Diaz, who became her country’s first Olympic Games gold medallist at Tokyo 2020, posted: “It's a privilege to see my dedication to weightlifting acknowledged at the upcoming Women in Sports Awards.
“Looking forward to sharing this special moment with fellow athletes, coaches, and sports leaders.”
And in typical Diaz fashion, the strong-willed trailblazer signed off: “This is for all women who continue to ignite the fire within. Sharing the Flame with all of you.”
