Astana, Kazakhstan, February 29, 2024: Former unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin has been elected as the new president of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan.
At an extraordinary session of the General Assembly of the NOC of Kazakhstan held on Monday, February 26, the 41-year-old Golovkin was elected to the top position of NOC President for the next four years.
Golovkin succeeds Timur Kulibayev who had been the head of the Kazakhstan NOC since 2015.
Golovkin was quoted on the Kazakhstan NOC’s Instagram page as saying: “Acting on behalf of our country in my new position is a great honour for me. When I was proposed to manage the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, I said that I would nominate my candidacy only if it would allow me to contribute to the development of Kazakh sport.
“As you know, I am neither a politician nor an official. I have learned to prove my actions with actions, not words. I believe that one of the most important tasks before us is the regulation of international relations.
“In this regard, I would like to say that I have my own vision. I have gained international experience over the years, have a team, and most importantly a long-standing sincere desire to realise everything in my home country,” Golovkin added.
The legendary middleweight boxer boasts an impressive professional record of 42 wins (37 by knockout), two losses and one draw.
His journey to prominence began with remarkable achievements as an amateur, including a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, a gold medal at the 2003 World Championships in Bangkok, a gold medal at the 2002 Busan Asian Games and Asian champion in 2004.
