Iraq NOC President Dr. Aqeel Muftin hopes to boost tourism through sports

Baghdad, Iraq, February 27, 2024: The President of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee Dr. Aqeel Muftin has suggested a joint collaboration with the government to revitalise tourism in the country by organising international sporting events.

In this regard NOC President Dr. Muftin held a consultation meeting on Monday, February 25, with the representative of the Ministry of Interior Dr. Saad Moan and the head of the Tourism Board Zafer Mahdi to discuss Cabinet guidelines on this topic.

Dr. Muftin suggested setting up a joint high committee of the NOC, the Ministry of Interior and the Tourism Board to pursue ways to promote tourism in Iraq through the sports sector. He said important Arab and Asian sporting activities should be targeted as an attraction to draw tourists to the country.

It was decided that the joint high committee meet on March 4 to look at a mechanism of action and draw up a suitable roadmap.

Also attending the meeting were a member of the Executive Office of the NOC Dr. Herdah Rauf, NOC Financial Secretary Sarmad Abdullah, and the Financial Advisor to the NOC President Tahsin Ali Al-Hassoun.
