Hong Kong, China, February 27, 2024: The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) has announced the nominations for the Cathay 2023 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards.
In a recent event at Olympian City, SF&OC called on the public to cast their votes online for their favourite athletes until March 17 to support the annual event.
Following the month-long nomination period, SF&OC received a total of 118 nominations from 54 National Sports Associations. These nominations will be voted by judging panels, the media and the public.
Hong Kong athletes achieved remarkable results on the world stage in 2023, winning medals in world-class competitions. At the Hangzhou Asian Games in September and October, Hong Kong won 53 medals - eight gold, 16 silver and 29 bronze - to rank 12th place among all countries and regions.
The officiating guests at the announcement were Mr. Edgar Yang, Honorary Secretary General of SF&OC; Dr. Karl Kwok, Vice President of SF&OC/Chairperson of the Sports Stars Awards Organizing Committee; Mr. Edward Bell, General Manager, Brand, Insights & Marketing Communications of Cathay; and Ms. Camay Lee, Assistant Director (Leisure Services) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
Over 100 nominated athletes and teams were present at the press conference to support the event and encourage the public to vote actively.
Mr. Yang said: "Over the past year, Hong Kong athletes have achieved remarkable results. They have written a glorious page in the sports history, bringing infinite glory to Hong Kong, China.
“The competition for this year's HKSSA is fierce. I call on everyone to actively participate in the voting, for support from the public is the source of motivation for athletes in pursuing their dreams and moving forward courageously."
The four award categories for this year's awards are "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards For Men", "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards For Women", "Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards For Sports Combination" and "Hong Kong Sports Stars Award For Team Only Sport".
The results will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on April 24, 2024.
