China surges ahead in overall medal rankings before swimming starts at Doha 2024

Doha, Qatar, February 11, 2024: The World Aquatics Championships – Doha 2024 has reached the halfway stage as three of the six disciplines have been completed.

The diving and artistic swimming competitions both ended on Saturday, February 10, joining the open water swimming which finished earlier in the week; the second week will see swimming and high diving begin their competitions alongside the ongoing water polo.

Swimming begins on Sunday at Aspire Dome and will run through until the last day of the championships on February 18.

At the close of play on Saturday, China enjoyed a huge lead at the top of the overall medal rankings with 16 gold medals, five silver and one bronze for a total of 22 medals.

Australia was second with 3-3-1 (7), followed by the Netherlands on 2-1- 0 (3), Italy 1-4-1 (6) and Great Britain in fifth place with 1-3-6 (10).

China’s 16 gold medals were won in two sports – nine in diving and seven in artistic swimming. 

Elsewhere, Kazakhstan were 11th with one gold medal, in artistic swimming; DPR Korea 13th with two silver medals, both in diving; Japan 15th with one silver and one bronze, both in artistic swimming; and Korea joint 16th with two bronze medals, both in diving.
