New Delhi, India, February 6, 2024: Legendary sprinter PT Usha is still the darling of the Indian media.
The President of the Indian Olympic Association was given the Lifetime Achievement award from the Sports Journalists Federation of India and Delhi Sports Journalists Association on Sunday, February 4.
After receiving the award at the National Sports Club in New Delhi, Usha said: “Actually, I was not expecting this at all. I am happy that people are still remembering my achievements and they have selected me for the lifetime achievement award.”
The Queen of Indian track and field dominated the Asian sporting scene in the 1980s and 90s, winning four Asian Games gold medals and seven silver medals. She also won 14 gold medals at the Asian Championships.
Quizzed on India’s preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Usha said that the training of the athletes was going well and added that she was thankful for the support received from the Government of India.
“Because of the support of the Indian government, the athletes did well at last year’s Asian Games, and in the future the government will also support,” the IOA President stated.
India recorded its best ever performance at the Asian Games finishing fourth in the medal standings at the Hangzhou showpiece last year. The country won 107 medals including 28 gold medals, 38 silver and 41 bronze.
