Tashkent, Uzbekistan, February 5, 2024: The National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan thanked Denis Istomin for his contribution to the development of sports in Uzbekistan as the tennis star announced his retirement from the professional arena on Sunday, February 4.
Istomin, 37, who made a great contribution to tennis in Uzbekistan, ended his career as a professional sportsman at the end of the Davis Cup World Group I playoffs first round tie between Uzbekistan and Poland which ended on Sunday at the Humo Arena in Tashkent.
Among the dignitaries on hand to watch his farewell match were Adham Ikramov, Minister of Sports, Oybek Kasimov, NOC Secretary General, Alisher Mirsoatov, Chairman of the Tennis Federation of Uzbekistan and Iroda Tolagonova, Secretary General of the Federation.
Speaking at the event, Minister Ikramov expressed warm thoughts on Istomi’s contribution to the sport in the country. Istomin participated in three Olympics Games – 2012 London, 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo. He won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Bangkok, two silver medals at 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and a bronze medal at 2014 Incheon Asian Games. In 2012, he reached his highest point in the world ATP professional ranking – 33rd.
In recognition of his achievements, Istomin was awarded the honorary title of Sportsman of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The NOC thanked Istomin and wished him good luck in the future.
Uzbekistan lost 4-0 to Poland in the Davis Cup tie.
