UAE to make Winter YOG debut with two athletes in Korea

Gangneung, Korea, January 19, 2024: The United Arab Emirates will participate in the Winter Youth Olympic Games for the first time at Gangwon 2024, the UAE National Olympic Committee has announced.

The UAE will be represented by two athletes: Alexander Astridge, 17, in men’s alpine skiing and Amenah Al Muhairi, 15, who will compete in women’s snowboard slopestyle and big air.

“The participation of the Emirates duo in the Olympic event for the first time is a great achievement, especially because their presence has come through qualification cards,” UAE NOC said in a Facebook post on January 15.

“It is a culmination of their efforts that started at the Emirates Ski Championship in Dubai in October 2022, followed by participation in several championships in Europe with the aim of increasing their technical levels.”

UAE NOC said the athletes had also joined training camps in Switzerland, Austria, France and New Zealand.

The 4th Winter YOG will run from January 19 to February 1 in four cities in Gangwon province, using most of the venues from the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics.
