Astana, Kazakhstan, January 11, 2024: Kazakhstan will be represented by 42 athletes in five sports at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games which will get underway on January 19.
The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan has also announced the flag-bearers for the opening ceremony of the January 19 to February 1 showpiece in Gangwon, Korea – speed skater Kristina Shumekova, 18, and short track athlete Erasyl Shyngyshan, 17.
“It is a big responsibility for me to become the flag-bearer at the opening ceremony in Gangwon. Our team is ready for the competitions, and I believe that we will be able to bring good results to Kazakhstan. Participation in the Winter Youth Olympics is an important exercise for each of us, part of our professional growth,” said Shyngyskhan who comes from the Urals.
Kazakhstan has been taking part in the Winter Youth Olympic Games since the inaugural edition in Innsbruck, Austria in 2012 and has so far collected two silver medals and six bronze medals.
It is the first time that the Winter YOG is being held in Asia. There will be gender equality with 15 disciplines spread across seven sports – biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing.
A total of 79 countries and regions will compete in Gangwon.
