OCM pays tribute to Olympic footballer Shaharuddin Abdullah, 75

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, January 1, 2024: The Olympic Council of Malaysia is mourning the loss of Olympic footballer Shaharuddin Abdullah, who passed away on December 28. He was 75.

 

Shaharuddin Abdullah was a native of Penang and played for the Malaysian national football team from 1966 to 1974.

 

The former striker was a member of the team that played in the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, and scored the first goal of their campaign in a 3-0 victory over the United States at Ingolstadt.

 

He also represented Malaysia in four South East Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games from 1967 to 1973, winning one silver medal and two bronze medals, and two Asian Games in 1966 and 1970.

 

"On behalf of the OCM, we really appreciate the contribution of Shaharuddin Abdullah in the development of football and the Olympic Movement with the participation of four SEAP Games, two Asian Games and one Olympic Games" said Tan Sri Dato' Sri (Dr.) Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President OCM.

 

Shaharuddin Abdullah was inducted into the OCM Hall of Fame in 2004 along with the rest of the team from the 1972 Munich Olympics.
