Tashkent, Uzbekistan, January 1, 2024: In accordance with a decision made by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Cabinet of Ministers, athletes who won medals at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, were awarded financial prizes at a ceremony held at the National Museum of Olympics and Paralympics in Tashkent.
Athletes who won gold medals received US$10,000, silver medallists got US$5,000 and bronze medallists received US$2,500. Coaches also received a financial boost, getting US$5,000, US$2,500 and US$1,250 for gold, silver and bronze medals won by their athletes, respectively.
Uzbekistan won a total of 71 medals at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, including 22 gold medals, 18 silver and 31 bronze. The country finished fifth overall in the medal standings.
At the Asian Para Games, Uzbekistan won 79 medals in total, including 25 gold medals, 24 silver and 30 bronze. They finished eighth overall in the medal standings.
Addressing the athletes at the ceremony, Odil Abdurakhmanov, Head of the Department of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, said the country would always support its athletes and create a conducive sporting environment for them.
In turn, Sports Minister Adham Ikramov, NOC Secretary General Oybek Kasimov and Chairman of the National Paralympic Committee Mukhtarkhan Tashkhodzhayev welcomed the athletes and wished them all the best in the future.
Asian Games taekwondo champion Ulugbek Rashitov, head coach of the Uzbekistan boxing team Tolqin Qilichev, para athletics gold medal winner Asila Mirzayorova, and Dilshod Yoldashev coach of the national para canoeing team also spoke at the event.
They noted that the financial prizes were a huge motivation before the new Olympic year.
