Tehran, Iran, February 13, 2020: The President of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Reza Salehi Amiri, has expressed confidence that the country will qualify more athletes for the Olympic Games.

Right now, Iran has qualified 41 athletes – 37 men and four women – in eight sports for the summer showpiece in Tokyo 2020.

“We will definitely get more quotas for the Olympics in the coming days,” said Salehi Amiri. “Our impression is that we will perform better at the Tokyo Olympics both in terms of quota and results.”

Apart from two team sports which are sending 12 athletes apiece – basketball and volleyball – Iran will also be represented in archery (1), athletics (2), road cycling (1), shooting (6), taekwondo (2) and wrestling (5). The four female athletes are in shooting.

Iran won eight medals at the 2016 Rio Games including three golds, one silver and four bronze. The gold medals came in weightlifting (2) and wrestling. A total of 63 athletes in 15 sports took part in Rio.
