Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 23, 2023: Korea’s Asian Games champion An Se-young is among three nominees for the Badminton World Federation women’s player of the year award 2023.
An, 21, won the women’s singles title and women’s team event in Hangzhou in a year when she also captured World Championships gold in Denmark. She is also ranked No.1 in the world and No.1 on the BWF HSBC Tour.
The other two female nominees are China’s Chen Yufei, silver medallist in Hangzhou, and Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.
The three nominees for male player of the year are Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, Seo Seung Jae of Korea and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, 2023 men’s world champion from Thailand.
The season’s most outstanding athletes will be honoured at the prestigious BWF Player of the Year Awards in Hangzhou, China on December 11.
The awards ceremony will be held during the annual HSBC BWF World Tour Finals Gala Dinner.
There are eight award categories, including three for Para badminton.
The nominees were ratified by the BWF Council and selected based on performances during the 2022/2023 season from November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023.
The HSBC BWF World Tour Finals will be played at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium from December 13-17.
There will be a new awards structure from 2024: Men’s Singles Player of the Year, Women’s Singles Player of the Year, Men’s Doubles Pair of the Year, Women’s Doubles Pair of the Year, Mixed Doubles Pair of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year (Men), Players’ Player of the Year (Women), Eddy Choong Rising Star, Men’s Para Badminton Player of the Year, Women’s Para Badminton Player of the Year, Para Badminton Pair of the Year, BWF Hall of Fame Inductees.
The revamped BWF Player of the Year Awards aims to increase prestige and transparency of the awards, as well as engaging key stakeholders throughout the voting process.
