Chopra, Kitaguchi, Yavi nominated for athlete of the year

Monaco, November 13, 2023: Olympic, World and Asian Games javelin champion Neeraj Chopra of India is one of three athletes from Asia nominated by World Athletics for Athlete of the Year 2023.

The other two are in the women’s section – Japanese javelin thrower Haruka Kitaguchi and Bahraini middle-distance runner Winfred Yavi.

World Athletics has issued a list of 11 nominees in both the men’s and women’s awards.

The final five in each category will be announced on November 13-14, with the winner to be declared on December 11.

Chopra, Olympic javelin champion in Tokyo, was nominated on the strength of winning the world title in Budapest and also the Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou, China.

The other 10 nominees for Male Athlete of the Year 2023 are:

*Kelvin Kiptum, KEN, marathon, London and Chicago Marathon winner, Marathon world record breaker

*Pierce LePage, CAN, decathlon, World champion, World leader

*Noah Lyles, USA, 100m/200m, World 100m and 200m champion, World leader and undefeated in six finals at 200m

*Alvaro Martin, ESP, race walk, World 20km and 35km race walk champion, World leader 20km race walk

*Miltiadis Tentoglou, long jump, World champion, European indoor champion

*Karsten Warholm, NOR, 400m hurdles/400m, World 400m hurdles champion, European indoor 400m champion. 

In the women’s section, Japan’s Kitaguchi was crowned World champion in Budapest and was also Diamond League champion in javelin.

Bahrain’s Yavi was nominated for her efforts in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase in which she won the World title in Budapest and was also Diamond League champion with world lead.
