Goa, India, October 31, 2023: Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha has called for the National Games to be held every two years, arguing that regular hosting of the multi-sport event will inspire athletes to aim higher.

The 37th National Games got underway in Goa last Thursday, October 26. The event has been held infrequently. There was a seven-year gap between the Games in Kerala (2015) and Gujarat (2022).

“With its vast legacy and tradition, it represents more than just a competition,” said the track legend.

“Sports have unparalleled power to unite, inspire and transform lives. Every participant here, be it the representatives of national sports federations, athletes, coaches, supporters play a crucial role in strengthening the very fabric of our nation’s sporting culture.

“By its very nature, the National Games acts as a powerful catalyst fostering this culture in recognising raw talent and in igniting the hopes of billions.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in attendance at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda and the IOA President said Modi’s role in transforming India into a global sporting powerhouse cannot be missed.

“True to that vision, we see an extraordinary surge in infrastructure development, training facilities and opportunities for budding athletes. Our recent performance in winning a record 107 medals at the Asian Games is a testimony to this fact. Every single medal won, every record broken, and every hurdle crossed, reflects on the Prime Minister’s dream of a robust and vibrant India, resonating in cheers and applause of sporting success,” the former track queen was quoted by the Times of India.

The National Games, an Olympic-style multi-sport event, features participation from 28 states and eight union territories. It is being held in Goa from October 26 to November 9 and will span across multiple venues throughout the state, with cycling and golf to be held in New Delhi.
