Mumbai, India, October 15, 2023: India is interested in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said.

In a speech at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Mumbai, India, Modi said India “will leave no stone unturned” in efforts to secure the showpiece.

The country has never staged the Olympics, although it has staged the Asian Games twice - inaugural one in 1951 and 1982 - both in New Delhi, and the 2010 Commonwealth Games also in Delhi.

Modi said hosting the Olympics is “the age-old dream” for India.

“We want to realise this dream with your collaboration and support. I am confident that India will get the support of the IOC,” he told the committee.

Modi also said India would look to host the Youth Olympics in 2029.

“Sport is not just about winning medals but also winning hearts,” he added.

Mexico and Indonesia have officially expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, and in September Poland president Andrezj Duda said his country was also hopeful of staging the event.

Paris will host the 2024 Olympics, with Los Angeles staging the Games in 2028, and Brisbane in 2032.
