Tashkent, Uzbekistan, October 12, 2023: The President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has congratulated the country’s athletes who competed at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, returning with a record haul of medals and finishing fifth in the overall medal standings.
In a congratulatory letter, President Mirziyoyev said: “From the bottom of my heart I congratulate you on your worthy participation and achievement of high results at the 19th Summer Asian Games in Hangzhou.
“The entire people of Uzbekistan supported you and your persistent struggle which brought the country 22 gold medals, 18 silver and 31 bronze medals. This is a record result compared to the last Asian Games.”
President Mirziyoyev was also pleased that half of the gold medals were won by female athletes. “I would like to note with particular satisfaction the fact that exactly half of the gold medals won by our country came from 31 athletes who were girls.”
Uzbekistan finished fifth in the medal standings and according to President Mirziyoyev this has “opened another bright page in the history of Uzbekistan sport”.
He concluded: “These successes achieved at the Asian Games are of great importance for us, because in this way you glorified the national sports school and showed the whole world what great achievements the youth of Uzbekistan are capable of.
“I am convinced that you will reach great heights at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Once again, I heartily congratulate you on your historic result achieved at a major international sports tournament – the Asian Games – and I wish you all health, new victories in the future and prosperity to your families.”
