Hangzhou, China, September 23, 2023: The Hangzhou Asian Games opening ceremony was captivating, showcasing Chinese cultural elements and stunning visuals.

Just as Bai Juyi's poetic words, "When I recall Jiangnan, Hangzhou brings back most of my memories," set the stage for a memorable event with a stunning visual that displays the beauty of ancient and modern Hangzhou and the unifying power of sports.

Incorporating water elements reminiscent of Hangzhou's famous West Lake, along with the Autumn theme under the solar term Qiufen, added depth to the performance. The use of boats and the luminous lanterns of Autumn was spectacular. This connection to mid-autumn symbolized reunion, mirroring the unifying power of sports. The deafening cheers for each delegation were amazing during the parade.

The parade was definitely one of the highlights, athletes from diverse nations, donning their distinct and vibrant attire, greeted by thunderous cheers from the audience. It was a testament to the ability of sports to bring people together, transcending boundaries and differences.

In those moments, I couldn't help but be awed once again by the unifying force of sports, symbolizing the spirit of unity and togetherness that the Asian Games represent. Not to mention, I felt so proud as the members of Hong Kong’s delegation marched to the stadium, with rugby sevens star Salom Yiu Kam-shing and wushu’s Juanita Mok Uen-ying carrying the HKSAR’s flag. It was fun to notice the fencers including Cedric Ho, whom I have interviewed before, taking selfies and having fun on the stage.

Hangzhou's opening ceremony was not just a spectacle but a celebration of culture, unity, and the shared love for sports on a grand stage.

Even though the angle from my seat could not enjoy the rippling effects of water, overall, it was still an outstanding performance; the first-ever digital torchman displays crafty technology. I hope that both athletes and audience alike can fully enjoy the games to the fullest extent possible.
