OCA, Alibaba Cloud team up to restore the glory of China’s Asian Games debut at Tehran 1974

Hangzhou, China, September 16, 2023: The Olympic Council of Asia and OCA Official Library, in partnership with Alibaba Cloud, is hosting a fascinating exhibition of China’s first participation in the Asian Games, at Tehran in 1974, during the upcoming Asian Games.

The exhibition, which will include historical photographs from the Tehran Asiad, will take place at the Hangzhou Asian Games Museum from September 24 to October 8.

It is the first exhibition of its kind in Asian Games history to focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) restoration and has the technical support of Alibaba Cloud and its Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) expertise.

The OCA Official Library has released a first set of 10 photos of the Tehran Asian Games which show the Chinese delegation marching in the opening ceremony, Chinese female athletes in the hurdles, gymnasts on the balance beam and Chinese athletes competing in table tennis, basketball and fencing, as well as victory ceremonies.

It was the first Asian Games that the People's Republic of China had entered, and they finished third in the final medal rankings with 32 gold, 46 silver and 27 bronze medals for a total of 105.

The historical footage from the capital city of Iran is being revealed for the first time and Alibaba Cloud is running an AI restoration campaign to bring the Tehran Asian Games back to life. The winners will have the chance to display their work at the themed AI photo restoration exhibition at the Hangzhou Asian Games Museum.

Going back to the Tehran Asiad 49 years ago, Su Zhibo, with a score of 552, won the men’s 50-meter pistol event and became the first Asian Games gold medalist of the People’s Republic of China.

Nearly half a century later, footage of China's first participation in the Asian Games is displayed publicly for the first time. Recently, the OCA Official Library cooperated with Alibaba Cloud to host the "AI Restoration of Precious Historical Footage of the Asian Games" events.

The new exhibition will also be a landmark for China, as their hosting of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8 will celebrate a near 50-year journey for China taking part in the Asian Games.

The OCA Official Library and Alibaba Cloud are hosting the "AI Restoration of the Asian Games" campaign, inviting AI developers around the world to participate in the restoration of the photos to revive the spirit and magnitude of the occasion during the Hangzhou Asiad.

Developers can freely combine and apply various algorithms for restoration on Alibaba Cloud's machine learning platform PAI (Personal Activity Intelligence). PAI comes with abundant popular open-source restoration models and the Stable Diffusion WebUI service. New PAI users can also enjoy free trial resources which were originally worth more than 10,000 Yuan.

Developers who submit their work before September 14 are eligible to participate in the "Restoration Award" competition. Evaluation criteria include restoring operations technique, authentic style and the correspondence with history.

Winners will be awarded an honorary certificate jointly issued by Alibaba Cloud and the OCA Official Library. Winning entries may also have the chance to be featured in the "1974 Tehran Asian Games Special Exhibition" at the Hangzhou Asian Games Museum.
