EFG Young Athletes Foundation Hong Kong launches International Golf Challenge and appoints new Ambassador

Hong Kong, 13 September 2023

Ahead of the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, members of the Asian Games golf teams representing Hong Kong China and Singapore are to compete in the inaugural EFG Young Athletes Foundation International Golf Challenge fundraiser in Hong Kong – including Matthew Cheung, new Ambassador for the EFG Young Athletes Foundation Hong Kong.

The EFG Young Athletes Foundation, which supports talented young athletes in Hong Kong across all sporting disciplines, today launched the inaugural EFG Young Athletes Foundation International Golf Challenge at the Old Course at the historic Hong Kong Golf Club. Heavy rain in the lead up to the event hampered course preparations at Fanling with the Eden Course, which had been designated for play, left saturated. But after receiving agreement from the HKSAR government, the two-day tournament will now take place over the better draining Old Course.

During this two-day tournament, members of the Asian Games golf teams representing Hong Kong China and Singapore will go head to head in a modified Ryder Cup format playoff. The Hong Kong China team consists of Tiffany Chan, Hong Kong’s first LPGA player and an EFG Global Sport Ambassador, together with Taichi Kho, Arianna Lau and Matthew Cheung. The Singapore team consists of top female golfer Koh Sock Hwee, together with James Leow, Aloysa Atienza and Ryan Ang.

The EFG Young Athletes Foundation International Golf Challenge will not only allow golf enthusiasts to enjoy a spectacular showdown between these two teams of exceptional golfers but will also raise funds to support the work of the EFG Young Athletes Foundation Hong Kong and Singapore Golf Association. Through a range of programmes and initiatives, these two organisations seek to nurture young talent and help aspiring athletes to achieve sporting success in the global arena.

In conjunction with the start of the EFG Young Athletes Foundation International Golf Challenge, the EFG Young Athletes Foundation today also announced that Matthew Cheung – Hong Kong’s newest Asian Tour golf professional – has been appointed as an Ambassador for the Foundation. In this role, he will represent the EFG Young Athletes Foundation Hong Kong at various sports events and activities, including golf tournaments, community service projects and other public events, and serve as a positive role model, inspiring young athletes to reach their full potential.

In addition, the EFG Young Athletes Foundation has named the talented young amateur golfer Isaac Lee as one of the recipients of its scholarship for 2023.

Almost all of the players in the Hong Kong China and Singapore Asian Games golf teams have benefited from support from EFG or the EFG Young Athletes Foundation during their golfing careers. Tiffany Chan has been EFG’s Global Sport Ambassador since 2017, while Matthew Cheung has just been named as a new Ambassador for the EFG Young Athletes Foundation and Arianna Lau was the EFG Young Athletes Foundation Scholar for 2021. Koh Sock Hwee has been supported by EFG in Singapore since 2018. Further, James Leow is an Ambassador for the EFG-SGA Elite Young Golfers Squad and Aloysa Atienza received an EFG-SGA Elite Young Golfers Scholarship.

Albert Chiu, Executive Chairman Asia Pacific of EFG and Chairman of the EFG Young Athletes Foundation: “I am very pleased to welcome our new Ambassador Matthew Cheung and I wish to congratulate our new Scholar Isaac Lee. As Chairman of the Foundation, I am proud that so many athletes supported by EFG or the EFG Young Athletes Foundation Hong Kong will be competing in the Asian Games 2023. This demonstrates how far young talent can go with the right partner – achieving sporting excellence and realising their ambitions.

Matthew Cheung, Asian Tour Professional and EFG Young Athletes Foundation Ambassador: “I am delighted to be named as an EFG Young Athletes Foundation Ambassador. As a young player, I remember EFG being a constant and positive force, supporting the sport of golf in the region. As a professional golfer from Hong Kong, I am now pleased to help return that support and to hopefully extend its impact to other aspiring elite athletes across the city.”
