Oman to compete in seven sports at Hangzhou Asian Games

Muscat, Oman, August 17, 2023: Oman will take part in seven sports at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8.

The Oman Olympic Committee, whose Board of Directors met last week in a meeting chaired by President Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair, approved Oman’s participation in athletics, beach volleyball, hockey, sailing, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

Oman will pin its hopes of a medal in athletics and sailing with beach volleyball and weightlifting capable of springing a surprise according to local media. The country returned empty-handed from its last two Asian Games campaigns – 2014 Incheon, Korea and 2018 Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.

Omani sprinter Barakat Al Hathi was the last athlete to win a medal for Oman, clinching the bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

The Hangzhou Games will be Oman’s 11th Asian Games appearance since making their debut in 1982.
