Fukuoka, Japan, July 28, 2023: Hong Kong China’s Tokyo Olympic Games hero Siobhan Bernadette Haughey put her team on the medal map at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Friday night.
Haughey, who won two silver medals at Tokyo 2020 in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle, took the silver medal in the women’s 100m freestyle behind Australia’s defending world champion Mollie O’Callaghan.
The 19-year-old Aussie came home in 52.16 seconds, 0.33 seconds ahead of the 25-year-old Haughey, who finished second in 52.49 seconds.
Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands, the fastest in qualifying, won bronze in 52.71.
“It means so much to me because I was always so close,” Haughey said. “I was either fifth or fourth, and last time in the 100m freestyle I didn't make it to the finals.
“So, this time, finally I can go home with something that just means so much to me.”
