Belihuloya, Sri Lanka, July 24, 2023: The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka in conjunction with the Sabaragamuwa University in Belihuloya has conducted an Olympic Values Education Programme for university physical education instructors.
The four-day OVEP course, which was held under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity, began on July 21 and ends on Monday, July 24. It was attended by 20 PE instructors representing various universities around Sri Lanka.
The theme of the course was "Knowing Olympic Educational Values" with a number of different topics addressed. Among them was "Olympism and Heritage and Delving into Olympic Values" by Professor B.L.H. Perera; "Olympic Values in Action: Self for Society" by Ms. Eranga Chrishanthi Fernando; and "Safe Sport Applications: A Culture of Respect" by Gobinath Sivarajah.
Sabaragamuwa University is located in the town of Belihuloya, 175 kilometres from the capital of Colombo. The pilot project for university PE instructors was held with the aim of disseminating Olympic values and knowledge across universities in the island nation and to help uplift the minds of undergraduates.
In a statement on its website, the Sabaragamuwa University said: “The essence of our future will be the youth in our universities and thus it is necessary to cultivate humanity values. Olympism is a philosophy of life that uses sports for the development of humanity.”
