Fukuoka, Japan, July 21, 2023: China romped to another 1-2 finish on the penultimate day of the diving competition at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Friday.

Chen Yiwen, 24, won the gold medal in the women’s 3m springboard with 359.50 points, 18 points more than her 21-year-old team mate and silver medallist Chang Yani, who finished second with 341.50.

Canada’s Pamela Ware, 30, took the bronze with 332.00. Japan’s Sayaka Mikami, 22, finished seventh with 305.25 points.

Chen and Chang had teamed up earlier in the meet to win the women’s 3m synchro, and Chen’s victory on Friday kept China perfect on 11 gold medals from 11 events with just two more events to come on Saturday’s closing day.

Chinese divers won 13 titles out of 13 at the world championships in Budapest last year and are on course to repeat that feat on Saturday.

By reaching the final in Fukuoka, all 12 athletes had already clinched quota places for their National Olympic Committees at next year's Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Saturday is the last day of diving at these World Championships with China strong favourites in the mixed 3m synchro and men's 10m platform finals.
