IOA President P.T. Usha lauds Indian athletics team

New Delhi, India, July 20, 2023: The President of the Indian Olympic Association, P.T. Usha, has congratulated the country’s athletes for an outstanding performance at the 25th Asian Athletics Championship which concluded in Bangkok last Sunday, July 16.

India finished third in the medal standings with 27 medals – six gold, 12 silver and nine bronze. In terms of medals won, the Bangkok campaign is India’s joint-highest tally at the Asian Championships alongside Bhubaneswar, India, in 2017.

“What a fantastic performance from our Indian contingent at the 25th Asian Athletic Championships 2023. A total of 27 medals that resulted in us finishing third in the medals tally. Kudos to all our athletes, and the coaching and support staff that enabled this performance,” P.T. Usha wrote on her Facebook page.

Japan topped the medal standings with a total of 37 – 16 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze – while China finished second with 22 medals comprising eight gold, eight silver and six bronze.

India’s six gold medals were won by Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 100m hurdles), Abdulla Aboobacker (men’s triple jump), Parul Chaudhary (women’s 3000, steeplechase), Ajay Kumar Saroj (men’s 1500m), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men’s shot put) and the mixed 4x400m relay team.

Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra did not participate in Bangkok.

P.T. Usha also praised the Athletics Federation of India after it was conferred as the best member federation in Asia by the Asian Athletics Association.
