New Delhi, India, July 17, 2023: The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has congratulated the athletics team on winning 27 medals at the 25th Asian Athletics Championships 2023 in Bangkok.
India won six gold, 12 silver and nine bronze to finish third in the final rankings of the continental championships, which ran from July 12-16.
Japan led the way with 16 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze (total 37), while China came second on 8-8-6 (22).
PM Modi (@narendramodi) tweeted: “Outstanding performance by the Indian contingent at the 25th Asian Athletics Championship 2023!
“Our athletes won 27 medals, the highest medal tally on foreign soil in an edition of the Championships. Congrats to our athletes for this achievement. It fills our hearts with pride.”
The performance saw India equal their best-ever showing at the Asian Athletics Championships in terms of medals count. Indian athletes won 27 medals, including nine golds, at Bhubaneswar 2017 as well, reports the Olympic Channel.
The Asian Athletics Championships was held for the first time since Doha 2019 after the 2021 edition in Hangzhou, China was cancelled due to COVID-19.
