Rome, Italy, January 28, 2020: Asian Games champion Hidilyn Diaz won three gold medals at the Roma World Cup weightlifting meet in Rome, Italy on Tuesday to inch closer to booking a place at the Tokyo Olympics.

Diaz, 28, had a total lift of 212 kilograms, 93kg in the snatch and 119kg in the clean and jerk, in the women’s 55kg category to clinch all three titles.

The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist will qualify for Tokyo if she ends up in the top 10 in her weight class.

She is currently ranked fourth behind three Chinese athletes but Olympic rules allow only one athlete per country per weight category to compete in  Tokyo, which makes her technically at No. 2.

Diaz’s Olympic qualification will be made official if she comes through with another strong performance in the Asian Championship in Kazakhstan in April.

In Rome, Ukraine's Kamila Konotop finished second with 196kg and Tunisia's Nouha Landoulsi settled for bronze with 194kg.

Diaz is coming off a gold medal campaign in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in the Philippines – her first gold in the biennial regional meet, In 2018, Diaz also won the Asian Games gold medal in Jakarta, Indonesia.
