Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, June 28, 2023: The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan celebrated Olympic Day 2023 in the capital Nur-Sultan last Friday, June 23, with a trio of boxing legends proving a knockout with the fans.
London 2012 Olympics gold medallist Serik Sapiyev, Rio 2016 Olympics silver medallist Vasily Levit and World and Asian champion Merey Akshalov provided the star power at a sports festival held in Triathlon Park.
The Kazakhstan NOC organised a series of events for the public including games and relay races, performances by breakdancers, and demonstrations in taekwondo and karate by children of various ages.
Boxer Serik Sapiyev, who was also twice crowned world champion in the light welterweight class, 2005 and 2007, was pleased at the turnout of young children on Olympic Day.
Sapiyev said: “I am happy to see how young athletes are interested in Olympic sports and strive to become champions. I believe that every year the younger generation chooses sports more and more, and we will do our best to make them better than us.”
Young children participated in a quiz on the topic of Olympic sports as well as in the Fun Run relay races.
“The curiosity of the children who took part in the quiz is very pleasing. It’s nice to see that sport in Kazakhstan is developing so rapidly,” noted heavyweight boxer Vasily Levit.
The Kazakhstan NOC was celebrating Olympic Day for the 30th successive year. This year’s event was supported by the Tourism and Sports Industry Support Fund and Toyota Motor Kazakhstan.
