Male, Maldives, June 26, 2023: The Maldives Olympic Committee celebrated Olympic Day 2023 with three different atolls hosting a series of events on Friday, June 23.

The isles of Meemu, Noonu and Raa held a series of events to promote Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect with the highlight of the celebration being an Olympic Day Run. In total more than 500 participants featured in all three atolls.

In addition to the run, participants also engaged in traditional Maldivian sports. One sport was Dhafi Negun, a game played with a ball made from coconut fibre, and involves two teams of five players each who try to score points by throwing the ball into a small hole in the ground.

The celebrations were organised by the island councils supported by the Maldives Olympic Committee. The events provided the people of the islands to come together and celebrate Olympic values while promoting physical activity.

Olympic Day served as a reminder of the positive impact that sports can have on individuals and communities, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
