Tashkent, Uzbekistan, June 18, 2023: Three-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist in fencing, Sobirjon Roziyev, was feted by the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan on his 70th birthday on June 15.
A celebratory ceremony was held at the Uzbekistan NOC Headquarters in Tashkent and attended by the Minister of Youth and Policy and Sports Adham Ikramov, NOC Secretary General Oybek Kasimov, NOC Vice President Sherzod Tashmatov and members of the Council of Sports Veterans headed by Bahadir Makshitov.
Minister Ikramov lauded the contribution made to the development of sports in the country, in particular fencing, by Sobirjon Roziyev, who is a former President of the NOC (1995-2003).
Secretary General Kasimov also highlighted the many years of effective activity by Roziyev in promoting the Olympic movement.
Fencing legend Roziyev was born on June 15, 1953. He won an Olympic silver medal for the Soviet Union at the 1980 Moscow Games. He was awarded the title Honoured Athlete of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 1992.
In his turn, Roziyev was happy at the attention and care given by sports officials to veterans and said he would continue to contribute to the development of sports in Uzbekistan.
