Hong Kong, China, June 16, 2023: Tokyo Olympian Oscar Coggins was the special guest at the Olympic Council of Asia’s Asian Games Youth Reporter Project held in conjunction with the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China on Friday.
The three-hour workshop took place at the headquarters of the SF&OC in Causeway Bay and was attended by 12 students representing four local universities as well as the Hong Kong Sports Press Association. The universities were the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Shue Yan University.
Coggins, a 23-year-old triathlete, attended the press conference exercise of the workshop and answered questions about his training, his hopes for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou this year and also about the discipline and determination needed on a daily basis to keep improving his times in the swim, bike and run of the gruelling triathlon race.
After the 30-minute press conference, the students were asked to write a news article of 350 words based on Oscar’s comments and submit their work to the OCA and Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong. China. The articles will be assessed on Friday and Saturday, and the best entry will be announced at the Olympic Day celebrations and Hangzhou Asian Games Fun Run in Hong Kong on Sunday.
The student with the best essay will be invited to join the OCA media team at the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will run from September 23 to October 8.
The students and OCA delegation were welcomed by the Chief Executive of the SF&OC, Mr. Abraham Cheng.
“I would like to thank the OCA for bringing this Asian Games Youth Reporter Project to Hong Kong,” he said.
“The Hangzhou Asian Games are just around the corner and there is a lot of interest in the Games in general and especially in the athletes from Hong Kong, China.
“This workshop will provide an insight into the daily duties of a sports journalist at the Asian Games or Olympic Games and also offer one student the chance to attend the Asian Games.”
The OCA was represented by the Director of Media and Broadcast, Mr Jeans Zhou Jian, who said the OCA was taking the workshop around Asia and assembling a team of enthusiastic young reporters to work in Hangzhou.
“The Asian Games Youth Reporter Project is one of three elements of the OCA’s Asian Games for All campaign to promote the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou throughout Asia,” he said.
