Lausanne, Switzerland, January 25, 2020: The International Olympic Committee has said Jordan will host the Tokyo 2020 Olympics boxing qualifiers for Asia and Oceania after the event in China’s Wuhan was cancelled due to fears over the new flu-like coronavirus.

The IOC said in a statement that the qualification event will take place in the Jordanian capital Amman from March 3-11. The original schedule in Wuhan was from February 3-14.

“After a careful review of all alternatives, the Boxing Task Force approved the proposal of the Jordan Olympic Committee in order to confirm the competition dates and location as soon as possible in the best interest of the athletes preparing for the qualifier,” the IOC said.

The death toll from the virus, believed to have originated in Wuhan, rose on Saturday, January 25, to 41, with more than 1,300 infected globally.
