Bhutan Olympic Committee celebrates Olympic Day 2023 on a high

Thimphu, Bhutan, May 14, 2023: Olympic Day 2023 celebrations reached a high at the Merak Primary School in Thimphu last Saturday, May 6 when the Bhutan Olympic Committee commemorated the day – June 23 – the International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894.

At more than 3,500 metres above sea level, the Bhutan capital is easily the highest venue of Olympic Day 2023, and this was highlighted by the Bhutan Olympic Committee which kicked off this year’s celebrations in style.

The President of Bhutan Olympic Committee, HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, graced the event and granted tokha or meals to all the participants as well as members of the community.

The BOC said in a statement: “The Olympic Day celebrations is about promoting values of the Olympic movement in our communities, and encouraging people of all ages and abilities to take part in sports. Taking the celebration to a different Dzongkhag (District) every year is our way of fulfilling our vision of taking sports to all youth in the country.

“The Olympic Day is celebrated to remind us of the importance of sport in our lives as it teaches us the value of hard work, dedication and perseverance, and helps us to develop important life skills like teamwork, communication and leadership.”
