CTOC discusses gender equity in Olympic protocol seminar

Taipei, May 13, 2023: Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee held an Olympic Protocol Seminar featuring a variety of discussions on the topic of gender equity.

One of the invited keynote speakers, Mr. Anthony Edgar, who worked in IOC Media Operations for 18 years, pointed out that 90 per cent of sports photographers and 80 per cent of sports reporters were male. Therefore, the public were seeing sport from a male’s perspective.

Mr. Edgar said that female media professionals should be given equal rights to report on sport in order to give female athletes more chance of being portrayed for their ability and resilience rather than just based on their looks.

Associate Professor Nien-Hsuan Fang from National Chengchi University said: “You can’t be what you can’t see,” explaining that there were certain words that the media should use while portraying female athletes in the media in order to empower different generations of women.

Associate Professor Yu-Ling Chen from National Taiwan Sport University mentioned that people should not use the saying “This is just the way the culture is” as an excuse to stop progressing.

The seminar was held on March 7 in a hybrid form with over 100 participants in total.
