The President of the Sri Lanka NOC, Suresh Subramaniam, addressing participants, described the main purpose of the Gender Equity Committee – formerly known as the Women’s Committee – was to raise awareness of sexual harassment and to explain the rights of the athletes.
“The purpose of this committee is not to find fault or to police anybody. The purpose is to bring awareness. We must learn to respect each other and to move forward,” Subramaniam was quoted as saying in the latest edition of the NOC newsletter GoodSport.
The Chair of the Gender Equity Committee and Vice President of the Sri Lanka NOC, Niloo Jayatilaka, who disclosed that Safe Sport in Sri Lanka had been introduced by the NOC in 2018, spelled out the rights of athletes and explained the reason for holding the seminar.
“The NOC of Sri Lanka and its Executive Committee are brand ambassadors of sports and we have to walk the talk in what we preach to the sports community. As the apex body of sports in this country representing the Olympic movement, we have to be mindful of this process in our workplace,” Ms. Jayatilaka noted.
